Best fruits for Diabetes

Many people who have Diabetes feel that they can't eat fruits. Yes fruits are naturally sweet and yes they will affect your blood sugar levels but that doesn't mean you can't eat them if you have diabetes.

As you may be aware that it’s your total carbohydrate intake that affects your blood sugar levels rather than a particular food or fruit.

A single serving of fruit should ideally contain about 15 grams of carbohydrates. So opt for smaller portions of fruits instead of worrying about its carb content or about a single serving size (15 grams of carbohydrates) than the effect of your fruit intake on your blood sugar is the same.

To roughly understand the fruit servings opt for 0.5 cup of Mango (80 grams) or 1.25 cup of watermelon (180 grams) or 1.25 cup of strawberries (180 grams) or half of a medium banana or 0.75 cup of chopped pineapple (120 grams) as they contain about 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Fruits are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber and should be a part of a diabetic diet just be careful of the portions. Diabetics should steer clear of canned fruits, processed juices or dry fruits as they are packed with simple sugars.

Berries are healthy for diabetics


Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and fiber and are lower in carbohydrate content.

100 grams blueberries = 57 about calories; 100 grams strawberries = 32 about calories; 100 grams raspberries = 52 about calories

Cherries are healthy for diabetics


Cherries are a low GI fruit and can safely be included in your diabetic diet.

100 grams of cherries = about 63 calories and 16 grams of carbohydrates.

Cherries are rich with antioxidants, which help protect against heart disease and cancer.

Peaches are healthy for diabetics


Peaches are a treat for diabetics as they are a good food source of Vitamins A and C, Potassium, and Fiber.

Peaches are delicious with crushed ice or in a smoothie.

Apricots are healthy for diabetics


Apricots can be safely eaten by diabetics as they are rich in fiber and a low carb fruits.

One apricot = about 15 calories and 4 grams of carbohydrates; Did you know that 4 fresh apricots provide up to 70% of your daily vitamin A requirement.

Apples are healthy for diabetics


A small apple = about 58 calories and 14 grams of carbohydrates.

Apples are rich with fiber and a good source of Vitamin C. Do eat apple skin as it is rich in fiber as well as antioxidants.

Oranges are healthy for diabetics


Vitamin C packed Orange is a low GI fruit; Oranges is a good source of Folate and Potassium that help normalize blood pressure.
One medium Orange = about 62 calories and 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Pear is healthy for diabetics


Pears are healthy for diabetics as they are a low-carb fruit and are a good source of potassium and fiber.

Pears are an excellent addition to most salads.

Kiwi is healthy for diabetics


Delicious low-carb kiwi is a good source of potassium, fiber, and vitamin C.

One large kiwi has about 355 calories and 13 grams of carbohydrates, so it is safe addition to your diabetic diet.
